In 2012, 218,762 people visited North Star clinics to receive counselling  testing, and treatment, all registered with a passport system developed by ORTEC. ORTEC’s Corridor Medical Transfer System COMETS system facilitates the collection of site-specific health and demographic data. COMETS innovation – it is the first medical patient system in Africa where individual patient files can be accessed at different locations regardless of national borders.
“Technology continues to play a pivotal role in transforming how business and society functions. For the past 25 years the Computerworld Honours Program has had the privilege of celebrating innovative IT achievements,” said John Amato, vice president & publisher, Computerworld. “Computerworld is honored to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the 2013 class of Laureates and to share their work. These projects demonstrate how IT can advance organizations’ ability to compete, innovate, communicate and prosper.”
“Innovation and social responsibility is in the ORTEC DNA,“ stated ORTEC Consulting CEO Lambert van der Bruggen. “We are very proud that 29 RWCs across Africa are helping save displaced people’s lives and in the next 18 months we will open 21 new RWCs along with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. We will continue to work with North Star to facilitate adoption of the COMETS system to treat more people and mitigate disease outbreaks.”
