This new digital service allows patients to directly schedule mammogram appointments online. This move is intended to streamline the traditionally complex booking process. It makes the process more accessible for women across South Africa. Sheraan Amod is the CEO and Founder of RecoMed. He highlights the platform’s goal of empowering patients. He encourages them to take proactive steps in managing their health. “Patients now have the option to book directly with radiology providers, making it possible to undergo screenings and obtain results even before consulting a GP or specialist,” he states.
The launch of the mammogram booking platform comes at a critical time. Global breast cancer rates are projected to increase by 31% from 2020 to 2040. The World Health Organization reported 2.3 million cases of breast cancer in 2022 alone, marking it as the second most common cancer worldwide, with a particularly severe impact on underserved communities.
The collaboration was initially spearheaded by Bankmed and has gained momentum beyond October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Amod emphasizes that the initiative aims to raise awareness. It encourages routine screenings. The program provides an accessible, cost-effective ecosystem to improve early detection rates. This is a key factor in saving lives. RecoMed’s recent user survey reflected positively on the platform. Most patients found it effective and easy to navigate. It allows them to receive mammogram results for discussion with either the radiologist or a doctor.
