Ghana has successfully concluded the digitisation of its healthcare system. This achievement is a groundbreaking step aimed at transforming healthcare delivery across the country. By implementing the eHealth platform, the nation has centralised patient data, making medical records accessible across all hospitals in Ghana. This system, launched in collaboration with Ghana’s Ministry of Health and U.S.-based Lightwave eHealth Solutions, is a key component of the country’s strategy to enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency.

This digital transformation in health is a collaboration between Ghana’s Ministry of Health and U.S.-based Lightwave eHealth Solutions, which specialises in e-health. The initiative aims to centralise patient medical records in a single database. This database can be accessed by any connected hospital. This change enhances efficiency and productivity in healthcare. As Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia highlighted, “This digitisation effort will significantly improve service delivery in our health facilities.”

The introduction of eHealth in Ghana builds upon previous innovations, such as drone delivery for medical supplies and online pharmaceutical services, aligning with the country’s 2023-2027 Digital Health Policy and Strategy. This strategy focuses on providing every community in Ghana with timely and comprehensive healthcare by utilizing modern ICT solutions.

The Ministry of Health reports on expected outcomes. The eHealth system could result in significant cost savings. These savings range between €50,000 ($54,000) and €300,000 annually. Additionally, it is projected to reduce patient wait times by 35% to 40% in district hospitals and over 40% in regional and university hospitals, marking a major improvement in health service delivery across the country
