MOBILE BABY- Poliomyelitis Immunization

Polio immunization is a preventive vaccine given to babies to prevent them from contracting poliomyelitis disease.

The mobile baby polio immunization program is a geographic information service geared at polio tracking.  The application is designed to improve vaccination rates in pre-identified risk areas. The platform uses mobile network, smart phones and server to generate risk maps and automated reports.

This program was established in the Northern part of Nigeria, where polio is still endemic.  The partners working on polio eradication includes the Centre for Disease Control CDC, Rotary International, eHealth Nigeria.

These organizations also launched an emergency response a centre. The centre was designed to respond in real-time, to polio outbreaks and organise prevention activities through the provision of modern technology to health workers and offer a common place for agencies and organizations resources to participate on projects together.

The role of mobile devices for routine polio immunization campaigns involves health care providers to establish direct connection with the care givers and parents thereby bridging the gap in communication and other obstacles.

This approach is very important in areas with poor security, war zones, hard-to-reach locations and places where there are myths and ideologies about the dangers of polio programmes and little or no trust in immunization.

In these areas mass communication with the use of mobile phone text messages in their local languages and immunization based promotion is playing a central role in polio eradication

especially amongst most health workers and this can be tackled with consistent capacity building training, and internet and connectivity issues which is a common problem in the country .

To improve the efficiency of  this initiatives, increased effort should be geared towards the training of users, development of user friendly apps.

Platforms for this purpose should be designed with a focus on addressing the needs of end users, which could be achieved by including the end users in the design process.
