Algerian President gives support to Maghreb healthcare initiative

Driven by its Millennium Development Goals 2014, Algeria's healthcare industry is witnessing nothing short of a transformation.

As per the Public Investment Programme, the country's health sector is to receive US$ 8.25 billion for a modernisation drive which includes the opening of 172 new hospitals, 45 specialised health centers and 377 clinics by the end of 2014.

This impressive spending is backed by unwavering support from the government. Which is why Algerian President, HE Abdelaziz Bouteflika is endorsing an upcoming healthcare initiative in Algiers later this year.

Taking place on October 2nd and 3rd 2012, the Maghreb Health Summit is hosted and organised by French business information group naseba. President Bouteflika is inaugurating the event which is welcoming attendees from the Ministries of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.

Summit partner Dr Amir Abdellatif Touafek, President of the National Commission of Ethics and Regulation and Vice-President for Industry National College of Pharmacists, said: "Algeria is engaged in reconstruction and reforms which must be continued and intensified to face the new challenges and the growing expectations of their population. Now there is an increasingly serious need to promote a healthy lifestyle and vaccination policies -- which involves changing rooted behaviours and way of life."

The two-day initiative is convening key healthcare decision makers in North Africa, as well as selected members and representatives from the global pharmaceutical and medical sectors.

In addition, the summit is highlighting the role foreign direct investment and foreign expertise can play in the developing the region's healthcare sector. Emphasising the need for external support, Fabien Faure, naseba's Healthcare Series Director explained: "The Algerian government is on the right track to fight modern-day diseases. However, the country feels it needs more foreign expertise that will help it provide the best possible healthcare protection for its citizens. This initiative is presenting the latest global research and technological developments with the presence of European and US healthcare leaders."
